Technical building products present one of the largest emission sources in buildings, after energy use and main construction materials.
In 2023, Combient Pure together with ASSA ABLOY, KONE, Swegon and Vasakronan broke new ground as the companies set out for a year-long program to develop this product category’s circularity. The program accelerated developments in circularity among the participating companies with practical working methods, peer-to-peer learning and discussions with customers and other actors within the value chain.
A recap on Combient Pure’s Circularity Development Program Closing Event on February 14th, 2024
In the culmination of a year-long project, Combient Pure hosted an event that brought together companies who participated in the Circularity Development Program, and their stakeholders. On February 14th, 2024 over a hundred building industry and Combient company representatives gathered together at Combient Zenit in Stockholm, as well as online, to hear about the achievements of the participants of the Circularity Development Program 2023.
Press release: ASSA ABLOY, KONE and Swegon accelerated their circularity development in a year-long collaborative effort with Vasakronan and Combient Pure
During the program, ASSA ABLOY, KONE, Swegon and Vasakronanworked together for 12 months to develop the circularity of technical building products, such as ventilation products, elevators, and automatic doors. The participants went through development sprints in six main themes: understanding the customer, impact measurement, dismantling and reverse logistics, product life extension, circular procurement and aligning internal processes, utilizing peer-to-peer learning and frameworks provided by Combient Pure.
The program accelerated the internal developments of the participating companies and resulted in interesting new circular concepts and ways of working.

Learnings from the Program
"We consume more resources than the planet can provide. Even though we in Nordics have a high level of environmental awareness, we still live as though we had four planets at our disposal. This means that the ecological resources that the earth can generate in one year are consumed within three months."
"How can we apply a strategic approach to reduce the environmental impact of our products? By using life-cycle assessment (LCA) methodology we can quantify a product’s existing impact and mitigate this in an effective way."
"To harness the full potential of dismantling and reverse logistics, KONE has investigated different strategies and principles already for some time. Embracing design principles that prioritize simple disassembly, modularity, and standardized components, enables KONE to do efficient dismantling and promote material renewal."
"New revenue streams can be created through product resale or rental services, while also lessening the need for raw materials and associated energy consumption." Circularity Development Program's fourth sprint focused on extending the lifetime of products and components.
The fifth sprint of the Program focused on the circularity transformation by sourcing circular inputs and considering circularity in procurement practices. Specifically, it explored the landscape view on future material flows, benchmarked leading circular sourcing practices, and looked into circular procurement development in construction projects
Unlocking the transformative power of circularity within organizations demands not only a shift in product design, business models and value chain composition, but also cross-organizational internal realignment. In the Circularity Development Program’s last Sprint, we delved into the complexities of building internal cohesion for circular transition.
To enhance the circularity of technical building products, Combient Pure is running its first Circularity Development Program for industry giants ASSA ABLOY , KONE, Swegon, and Vasakronan. A groundbreaking 12-month program seeks to revolutionise how these technical building products are designed, manufactured, and utilised, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future for the building industry.
The Circularity Development Program has run for a six months and the companies have made several learnings.
