How to build resilient & sustainable supply chains for critical raw materials?

Industrial companies face unprecedented pressure in their supply chains. Decisions related to raw materials must be navigated with an eye on supply security, ambitious sustainability targets, and access to critical production inputs. Yet resilience and sustainability are often managed separately, making it difficult to identify strategies that strengthen both.

How can companies ensure that the raw material supply chains critical products and components depend on are both resilient and sustainable? This is the question that Combient has set out to explore, in a new Vinnova-funded project along with project partners RISE (Research Institutes of Sweden) and Chalmers University.

What is the project about?

Over 11 months, the ReSus Guidance project aims to define integrated guidance for assessing resilience and sustainability in critical raw material supply chains. This means understanding a) what indicators and metrics are and can be used to define resilience and sustainability in critical raw material supply chains, and b) how information and insights are gathered and shared within a single company and across the supply chain to improve resilience and sustainability. We also explore how collaborative foresight practices can strengthen decision-making in these areas.

The key goal of the guidance is to align these drivers to uncover hidden synergies, manage trade-offs, and ensure long-term industrial resilience and promote sustainable manufacturing.

The guidance will not be built in isolation. Through company interviews and a public workshop, industrial companies are invited to test, validate, and refine the guidance so that it best suits their decision-making needs.

We invite you to join the public, hybrid workshop on November 25, 2026 in Stockholm to benchmark capabilities with other peers, test the guidance, and provide your input into the discussion on what it means to align resilience and sustainability.

Sign up for the workshop here.
What to expect in the workshop?
  • Cross-functional Foresight & Collaboration: Benchmark existing decision-making structures and collaborative foresight capabilities with industry peers.

  • Resilience Gaps & Emerging Risks: Understand current blind spots in risk management and define shared industry needs to navigate the supply landscape of raw materials.

  • Guidance Testing: Hands-on evaluation of the proposed guidance to ensure it reflects real-world operational trade-offs.

We hope to see you there!
